Yesterday we provided some information regarding cyber-security and working from home. Sadly, this situation seems to be becoming more prevalent and sophisticated.

I cannot stress how important it is to ensure your systems are appropriately maintained and you are diligent in maintaining your security practices – don’t take instructions as to bank accounts via email (and don’t provide them this way either), don’t open emails or telephone messages that look unusual or are unsolicited.

What’s happened?

The Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) is aware of a significant increase in Australians being targeted with COVID-19 related scams and phishing emails.

In the last three months, the ACSC and the Australian Competition and the Consumer Commission’s (ACCC) Scamwatch have received over 140 reports from individuals and businesses across Australia.

These phishing emails are often sophisticated, preying on people’s desire for information and imitating trusted and well-known organisations or government agencies.

AustCyber’s guide to maintaining cyber security at home (provided by Small Business Commissioner)

For businesses working with sensitive, confidential or private information (and that’s most of us), working from home can present new cyber security issues.

If you’re concerned, check out AustCyber’s advice here. Basic tips include:

·        Use a reputable VPN and password manager

·        Help staff change the default password on their home router

Warn your workforce about the prevalence of COVID-19 scams and phishing attempts. If in doubt, don’t click.

Support for businesses, jobs & the community impacted by COVID-19

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic and its significant impact on local businesses, industry sectors and jobs, the South Australian Government has announced a second economic stimulus package – the Jobs Rescue Package, worth $650 million – that will provide immediate financial support and relief to those most affected.

The AICSA has written to the Premier (and Treasurer) requesting relief from the payment of registration fees and trust account audit requirements. We have also spoken to the Registrar-General regarding payment options for SAILIS accounts.

Tax stimulus and best approaches for South Australian SME’s

There have been many announcements over the past week about additional stimulus measures from both the Australian and South Australian governments.

Safeguard your mental health

I know I have been feeling fairly flat over the last couple of week. A mixture of anxiety, frustration, fear and grief. I will be honest there has been the odd meltdown – not knowing the answer to my questions or where we are heading is really stressful and I doubt I am on my own.

As such, I can’t stress to you enough how important it is to speak with each other, support one another and seek assistance when you need it.
